A new kickstarter project looks to simplify smart home tech by promising to do it all. It’s called the Swidget – a smart outlet that has modular capabilities; that will allow it to become a Bluetooth speaker, air freshener, emergency nightlight and more.
The Swidget Outlet Swidget will consist of two elements, the Swidget outlet and inserts. These modular components of the Swidget can be controlled via the mobile app, but they will also have connectivity via WiFi, Z-Wave or ZigBee. The company is targeting compatibility with Alexa, Google Home, Nest, IFTTT, SmartThings and Stringify, but is dependent on the level of backing the project receives.
The backing is important, because as it stands the current pledge will only include the Wifi insert. Stretch goals (what the company hopes to achieve with further funding) include the USB, Nightlight, Emergency light and Z-Wave module (the Bluetooth and motion modules do not have a timeframe).
The company is aiming to ship the device in June of 2018, and the project is almost halfway funded – with a month remaining – so this could be a smart home product that does it all and lives up to it’s pre-release hype. That is of course, as long as it actually ships.
